The School of Chemistry and Materials enrolled its first undergraduate in 1979 and postgraduate students majoring in Organic Chemistry in 2001. In 2010, the school was authorized as the first-level master’s degree program and began to enroll postgraduate students majoring in Chemistry Teaching in 2013.
In 2006, Chemistry was ranked as the high-quality major of general undergraduate education in Guangxi universities; in 2009, the school was ranked as the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Basic Chemistry and the province-level excellent teaching team of organic chemistry; in 2011, the school was awarded the Guangxi University Talent Innovation Team; in 2013, Organic Chemistry was awarded the key discipline with dominant characteristics in Guangxi; in 2014, the school was approved as the key laboratory of Synthetic and Natural Functional Molecular Chemistry and Functional Organic Molecular Chemistry was selected as the key discipline with regional characteristic. In 2018, the key laboratory of Natural Polymer Chemistry and Physics was successfully evaluated and approved as the Guangxi Key Laboratory. In the same year, Chemistry was approved as a major group for undergraduates in Guangxi and an experimental training and teaching base was approved by Guangxi Government. Three province-level Joint Training Bases for master’s degree in 2013, 2016 and 2018, two Guangxi Scholar Innovation Teams in 2016 and 2019, and two high-level innovation teams in Guangxi universities in 2017 and 2020, were approved respectively by Guangxi Government. Three courses, including Organic Chemistry, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Foundation and Virtual Simulation Experimental Study of Marine Anti-pollution Paint Production and Performance Testing, were approved as national first-class undergraduate courses in 2020. In 2021, Chemistry passed the second-level certification for normal major by the Ministry of Education. In the ranking of 2021 Best Soft Discipline in China, Chemistry in school was ranked at the top 40% and 93rd out of the 117 chemistry disciplines picked in China.
